    Eflani Çember Weaving

    One of the cultural assets of the Eflani district is the Eflani weaving (Eflani Çember Bezi), also known as Cember. This fabric is produced through a method called “haşıllama”, whereby the threads are cooked in a mixture of flour and water, then dried and finally woven on a weaving loom with combs.

    White fabric is used in summer time in order to protect from sun, while dark green, naphtha coloured scarves are used in winter. Today however, this fabric is not much in use anymore. Therefore, and in order to increase regional variety, the use of this weaving technique was shifted to the production of new products. 

    Basketry

    The Eskipazar district stands out for its basket weaving. For the production and weaving stage, wild hazelnut trees are moistened with water a few days beforehand, and then split into long slices with special hand tools. The person who does this work weaves baskets in various shapes, sizes, and purposes (like carrying vegetables, fruits, hay and grass) utilizing his own artistic skills.

    Handmade Walking Sticks

    The Yenice District's most important handicraft and tourist souvenir are the Yenice Walking Sticks. They are mainly made of cornelian cherry wood and boxwood.

    The walking sticks of Yenice are handcrafted one-piece handle sticks, where the handle is a solid part of the stick and not attached.

    Handcrafted Wooden Spoons

    Yazı village in the Yenice district has a long history of wooden spoon handicraft. Boxwood is used for the production of wooden cooking spoons, while wooden table spoons are made of beech tree, alder, and wild pear trees.

    Blacksmithing

    The art of blacksmithing in Safranbolu reaches back to ancient times. Blacksmithing, through hot and cold forging, is the art of forming metals after heating them in the forging furnace. Safranbolu's blacksmiths, who work on hot and cold forging, are masters in the fields of locksmiths, ironmongery, heating stoves, hinges, knives, ploughs, and all iron parts of doors and windows as a set. All metal items of the famous Safranbolu houses are crafted by its blacksmiths with great craftsmanship and artistic devotion.

    Tin Plating

    Tin plating in Safranbolu goes back a long way, offering manifold traditional data. In a district where great value is attached to copper, the handcraft of tin coating stood the test of time. Tin plating starts with smoothing the surface of the copper pot that needs coating with a hammer. The smoothed pots are cleaned with sand or coal pieces. While the cleaning process continues, the tin is melted on the other side. The melted tin is then poured into the pot and rubbed all over with the help of a rag of cotton.

    Handicraft of Yemeni Shoes

    As part of traditional clothing and footwear of Safranbolu you will find the Yemeni shoes. The Yemeni's insole, upper and inner lining are made of soft leather, and tough leather is used for the sole, thus making a completely natural shoe. The sides of the shoes are skilfully hand-stitched. The Yemeni shoes are sweat and odour preventing - very comfortable shoes.
